October of 2012 marked the 15th
anniversary of John Denver's passing. Denver's estate will honor his memory and
music with John Denver: A
Rocky Mountain High Concert. Audiences will watch John Denver
perform on video screens while being backed live by members of his original
touring band and accompanying string section. For the first time in 15
years, audiences will experience John Denver in concert, performing hit songs
from throughout his career. Over the years a number of tribute acts have
kept John Denver's music alive, but never before has there been a production of
this caliber presented by Denver's estate.
John Denver was an American folk singer and songwriter who became one of the
most popular singers of the 1970s. By 1969, he had released his first album,
"Rhymes and Reasons," which included the hit song "Leaving on a Jet Plane." His
breakthrough album, "Poems, Prayers and Promises," came out in 1971 and
contained the single "Take Me Home, Country Roads." The string of hits became
virtually ceaseless after that, including "Rocky Mountain High," "Sunshine on
my Shoulders," "Annie's Song," "Back Home Again," "Thank God I'm a Country
Boy," and "I'm Sorry/Calypso."
Today, Denver's status as a cultural icon stands undiminished. His popularity
and continuing influence on popular culture more than a decade after his
untimely death in 1997 is remarkable. Contemporary artists have not only been
clearly influenced by Denver's music, they have revived his catalog as well,
covering the old tunes in a variety of new ways. Regardless of the venue or
musical genre, Denver's music is routinely heard live on stage from a wide
variety of touring musicians, including the likes of The Avett Brothers, Bon
Iver, Carrie Underwood and more.
This production provides fans the opportunity to witness notable artists performing Denver's unforgettable music. It's also the chance to experience several artists that helped to influence Denver's own musical vision, as well as fellow artists that were Denver's close associates and either performed with or knew Denver closely.
