What do mathematics and dance have in common?
years Karl Schaffer and Erik Stern have been showing the magical connections
physical, engaging choreography peppered with their unique brand of humor and entertaining audience
interactions. From the stately Shadowed Flight to a vaudevillian handshake routine to Chinese legends of
flight told with giant Tangrams, the Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern Dance Ensemble addresses symmetry, number sense, the history of ideas and ultimately how we think..
The group has appeared at children's festivals, The Kennedy Center, conferences, schools and in hundreds of venues internationally. Their book, Math Dance with Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern, is popular among arts and mathematics educators worldwide. Along with many prominent educators, Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern feel strongly that patterns are one key to mathematics and the arts. In their work they create, express, examine, play with and reveal the joy and beauty of pattern, both through dance and by touching on the mathematics.
· * Reveals the presence of pattern in dance and mathematics
* Intersperses original, accessible dances with engaging talking and audience interactions
* Together, the dances and interactions address topics such as counting and number sense, geometric and three dimensional thinking, and the general Common Core Standards Mathematics Practices: look for and make use of structure: reason abstractly and quantitatively; look for and make use of regularity in repeated reasoning.
