Let's Make Art: Spring 2021

Let's Make Art: Spring 2021 Image

In 2020, the Arts Collaboratory launched our Fall season with the theme Let’s Make Art. To us, it was more than a turn of phrase. Over the past six months, it’s become a rallying cry. We believe in the power of art to change the world for the better—and we’re recruiting Buffalo’s artists and art lovers to join the cause.

We’ll continue our rallying cry through the Spring of 2021. But as the virus recedes and the snow melts, we’ll venture beyond art’s traditional venues—and bring the power of art to the entire Buffalo community. Art should be for everyone, and this season we’ll be out in the open—painting city walls, charting Buffalo’s storied art scene, and encouraging artists and art lovers to break out of their bubbles.

Twice a year, the Arts Collaboratory welcomes a visiting artist and in Spring 2021, our Working Artists Lab will be led by renowned painter Cecily Brown, in partnership with Artist/City, Bortolami, NYC. Cecily will collaborate with a group of artists, accompanying them out of their studios and classrooms and onto the streets of the city to create a mural intended for all of Buffalo

In March, we’ll be presenting UB first year MFA Nicole Chochrek’s remarkable new exhibition, open to all at 500 Seneca, where she is Artist-in-Residence. The stunning works included in Little, Cute & Lasts Forever feature thousands of tiny, colorful, seemingly innocuous pieces of plastic, and remind us of the ubiquitous material’s unsettling longevity.

The Arts Collaboratory will also continue to evolve our ongoing exhibition, Show Your Work, at UB Center for the Arts and The Sidway on Main Street, with additional locations to be announced. An installation spotlighting Buffalo’s painters, dancers, musicians, and creators, Show Your Art will serve as a launching pad for our ambitious online Artists Index, which will eventually list, promote and connect every working artist in Buffalo.

Last, but not least, the Spring of 2021 will see the opening of our new arts incubator, The Space Between. Located at 431 Ellicott, The Space Between will be a studio, workshop, gallery, meeting room and performance space for artists who want to challenge expectations, pressure test new ideas, and show work that’s not quite complete. At The Space Between, disciplines will collide, East and West will converge, horizons will be broadened and new collaborators will meet.

Those interested in throwing a few bucks into our virtual rent jar for The Space Between can donate here. Every dollar is welcome and appreciated!
